Changing Lives...

Essential Songs

Through The Essential Songs Project, young people engage for weekly held  sessions in inclusive group singing activities, working with tutors, some who have impairments, who act as role models for disabled young people in schools. The young people taking part are guided through a programme of group based vocal training, which enables them to explore a new and innovative repertoire from across the globe, and perform and record it together as a choir. Here we also engage in improvisation which leads to the participants being able to compose their own songs. The work creates a buzzing social environment in which individuals can recognise, explore, and express their sense of self, and their potential to play a pro-active role in the world in which they live.

Throughout the project we also create access to information relating to education and employment opportunities, as through the project we hope to discover and develop a new generation of potential musicians, technicians and performers. Limelight Music promotes the development of confidence and improvement in communication skills by encouraging the development of autonomy and creativity in young people leading to positive life choices. Participants are encouraged to lead some of the work and to develop skills in solo singing. All our Essential Songs projects culminate with a recorded and professionally led performance in conjunction with Limelight professional musicians most of whom are people with impairments.

The head teachers involved in Limelight Music’s previous projects have all commented that their involvement with Limelight Music evidenced an increase in the number of pupils progressing into new music learning opportunities and individual personal development. Our work involving the Essential Songs Project is a non- classroom based, extracurricular, inclusively delivered music activity which also concentrates on the humanistic principles of assisting the individual personal development of all the young people involved. As well as being a professionally led music training project, the sessions also concentrate on building a team spirit and promoting best practice in raising public awareness of people with impairments and those who may be considered to have additional support for learning needs.
